AI Search Is Changing Legal Marketing Faster Than Most Law Firms Realize

AI search for law firms

By Matt Starosciak

For nearly two decades, law firm marketing revolved around one question:

“How do I rank on Google?”

That question is still important—but it is no longer the only one that matters.

Today, potential clients are increasingly asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI platforms to recommend attorneys, explain legal issues, and help them narrow their choices. Instead of scrolling through pages of search results, they’re having conversations with AI.

For law firms, this represents one of the biggest shifts in legal marketing since Google first became the dominant search engine.

AI Search Is Different Than Traditional Search

Traditional search required users to enter keywords, review advertisements, compare websites, and continue refining their searches.

AI search works differently.

Someone might begin by asking:

“Who is the best personal injury lawyer in Atlanta?”

The AI doesn’t stop there. It asks follow-up questions, learns more about the user’s situation, and continues refining its recommendations.

That conversational approach changes everything.

Instead of simply trying to rank for broad keywords, law firms now need to demonstrate genuine experience, authority, and expertise.

Experience Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage

One of the most encouraging developments for smaller and mid-sized law firms is that AI appears to reward substance over sheer marketing budgets.

For years, firms with enormous SEO budgets often dominated traditional search results.

Today, firms with exceptional credentials, meaningful case results, deep subject matter expertise, and well-developed attorney profiles have an opportunity to compete on a much more level playing field.

AI is looking for signals that demonstrate authority—not simply pages filled with keywords.

What Law Firms Should Be Doing Now

While nobody has completely figured out AI search, several strategies are becoming increasingly clear:

  • Expand attorney biographies with meaningful accomplishments, credentials, speaking engagements, publications, leadership positions, and representative matters.
  • Publish detailed, experience-based content instead of generic articles written only to target keywords.
  • Showcase significant verdicts, settlements, transactions, and case studies whenever appropriate.
  • Maintain strong profiles on reputable legal directories, awards platforms, and other trusted third-party websites.
  • Continue investing in high-quality videos, thought leadership, and media exposure that reinforce your firm’s authority.

The firms that consistently demonstrate expertise across multiple platforms appear to have the greatest opportunity to earn visibility within AI-generated recommendations.

Don’t Chase Every AI Product

As with every major marketing shift, new vendors are emerging almost daily with promises of guaranteed AI rankings.

Some will provide real value.

Many will not.

Before investing in any AI marketing product or service, ask for real examples, measurable results, client references, and a clear explanation of how success will be measured.

AI marketing should still be judged the same way every other marketing initiative should be judged:

Does it generate better clients and measurable business growth?

The Future Is Already Here

Google remains the dominant source of legal searches today.

But AI search is evolving at an extraordinary pace, and law firms that begin adapting now will likely have a significant advantage over those that wait.

The firms that succeed won’t simply be the ones spending the most money.

They’ll be the firms that do the best job demonstrating their experience, authority, and value—both to potential clients and to the AI platforms helping those clients make decisions.

The legal marketing landscape is changing rapidly. The firms that embrace AI strategically—not blindly—will be in the strongest position to grow over the next several years.
